In 1676, lemonade street sellers formed "compagnie de Limonadiers" (the union of lemonade sellers) - While the rest of France was impacted by plague outbreak, Paris did okay. This is posited to be due to discarded lemon peels and rinds on the streets of Paris. The peels contain limonene and linalool which kills flea larva.
