# Evergreen notes
An evergreen note is an atomic note used to capture concepts, and create links with other atomized concept notes. Through this practice, knowledge is internalized and connections to other areas of research and interest can be made.
According to Andy Matuschak, the creator of the evergreen note:[^1]
> - Evergreen notes should be atomic
> - Evergreen notes should be concept-oriented
> - Evergreen notes should be densely linked
> - Prefer associative ontologies to hierarchical taxonomies
> - [[write notes for yourself by default]]
Unlike Luhmann’s [[Zettelkasten]] approach, notes can and should evolve over time. While the Zettelkasten creates structured links between notes, the idea is to build on the ideas though *new* notes. With the evergreen approach, ideas can be built upon through both *addition and revision*. It’s linked to the concept of [[Learn in public|learning in public]].
