# Obsidian Sync
## Transferring iCloud Drive to Obsidian Sync
I recently (December 2021) had my vault in [[iCloud Drive]] and switched to Obsidian Sync as well. I would *highly* recommend taking your vault out of the iCloud Drive and putting it on local storage, on all of your devices. [Obsidian recommends this as well.](https://help.obsidian.md/Obsidian+Sync/Local+and+remote+vaults) In part, it’s because [there’s a risk of data corruption or data loss](https://help.obsidian.md/Obsidian+Sync/Obsidian+Sync+and+third-party+services) if you use Obsidian Sync with a third-party service.
Here's how I did this on [[macOS]] and [[iOS]].
1. Close Obsidian on all of your devices.
2. On your Mac, drag your [[Obsidian]] vault from iCloud Drive to whichever local folder you intend to store it. Example: `/Documents/Obsidian/`
3. Make a backup of this file. [[Always make a backup]].
4. Open Obsidian, and select `Open folder as vault`. Point it towards the folder on your local hard drive.
5. [Set up Obsidian Sync.](https://help.obsidian.md/Obsidian+Sync/Set+up+Obsidian+Sync)
6. Open your iOS device, and you’ll want to create a new vault. Enter the same vault name as what’s on your desktop, and *do not* store it on iCloud.
7. [Make sure Obsidian Sync is enabled on your device.](https://help.obsidian.md/Obsidian+Sync/Set+up+Obsidian+Sync#Step+2+Enable+Obsidian+Sync)
8. [Connect to the remote vault you created in Step 5.](https://help.obsidian.md/Obsidian+Sync/Set+up+Obsidian+Sync#Step+4+Connect+to+a+remote+vault)
9. Rinse, repeat Steps 7 & 8 if you have other devices.
