# Society for Experiential Graphic Design

## Timeline

- **1973-07-03:** Initial meeting to explore forming a national organization for architectural sign designers. Attendees: John Berry, Richard Burns, Jim Glass, Chuck Byrne, Phil Meathe.[^1]
- **1974-04-09:** Second meeting in Houston. Group names itself the *Society for Environmental Graphic Designers*. [^2]
- **1990:** [[Americans with Disabilities Act]] passes.
- **1992:** First SEGD white papers published addressing [[Americans with Disabilities Act]] and technical guidelines for signage. [^3]
- **1995:** NEA grant to document the history of EGD, co-directed by Sarah Speare and Juanita Dugdale. [^4] ==What was the outcome of this?==
- **2005:** JRC Design, SEGD, and Hablamos Juntos develop symbols project that becomes education program for the use of symbols in healthcare environments. The *Universal Symbols in Healthcare Symbols Workbook* is published.[^5]
- **2009:** Federal Highway Administration’s *Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)* released (urban wayfinding allowances championed by SEGD & members)[^6]
- **2010**: SEGD and Hablamos Juntos introduce Universal Symbols in Health Care
- "a set of 56 graphic symbols that make hospitals and other healthcare facilities easier to navigate for underserved populations and patients with limited English or reading proficiency.”[^7]
- **2012:** *SEGD 2012 ADA White Paper update: Signage Requirements in the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design* released. [^8]
